How Do You Solve A Budget Crisis? Cut Firefighters, Right?

Well, that’s what the idiot Mayor thinks.

Luckily, everyone isn’t on board:

Expand The R2 Schedule, The Magic Voice, & Other SEPTA Musings

Oh, SEPTA. How I missed thee. Sure, people here may complain but – come on – could it get any better than riding a bus or a train or a subway and actually see OTHER people riding it, too?

Local’s the word lately – more craft fairs!

Yeah, didn’t you notice how much the words “buy local” are being used these days? Of course! It makes sense: support your community, and your community will prosper. Buy local, eat local, grow local, do local. And this means staying away from huge international chains. Yes, there’s a lot to be said for them, but try, try, try to stay away and support your local farmers, craftsmen, shops, etc.

In that spirit, here are two more craft fairs I know of this coming weekend. I’m sure there are more! Add on, if you like:

Shop, Rock & Roll: Girls Rock Philly and Mew Gallery present their combo craft sale at the Old Pine Community Center (401 Lombard) on Saturday, December 13, 2-6 p.m. Bands included. Sliding donation of $5-10.

The New Studio Holiday Bazaar: The New Studio (1241 Carpenter St., 3rd floor) has a fair selling gifts & goodies for mind, body, & spirit. Snacks. Friday, December 12, 7-10 p.m. and Saturday, December 13, 1-5 p.m.

Enjoy!

Tweetup/Food Drive with @geekswhogive at @natmechanics

So yes, the title of this post has been optimized for Twitter, because tomorrow night’s event at National Mechanics is a tweetup hosted by Geeks Who Give. But this isn’t just any tweetup, oh no: it’ll cost you five non-perishable food items to get in, and everything will be donated to Philabundance!

What’s Geeks Who Give?

Geeks Who Give seeks to mobilize this community to reach beyond its self contained boundaries, to route that amazingly powerful and positive energy to people and causes that really need it. […] Long term goals include idea, goods & services, and resource banks from which we can draw as well as coordinating volunteer opportunities on an individual basis and organizing large scale volunteer efforts for continued organization-based support.

Alex Hillman has a great write-up on his site, but there’s also the official GWG Events page, the Facebook event page. You can also follow GWG on twitter to get up-to-the-minute info.

Plaguing The Airwaves For 15+ Years!

Ever heard of the Earl Ferrell Fan Club?

If you’ve been listening to Philly sports radio (or practically any talk radio show in the Greater Philly area, including Pinky Kravitz in AC) – you may have heard some hilarious prank calls over the past 15 years invoking the name of an erstwhile former fullback for the then-Phoenix Cardinals.

Hors D’Ouevres (Which Shall Be Obeyed At All Times Without Question!)

Don’t mention the war…I think I did it once..but I got away with it..”

Yeah, The Germans” is my favorite episode of “Fawlty Towers“. Which reminds me – My awesome new friend and I checked out the 1st ever Christmas Village at City Hall on Tuesday. Now I’m REALLY angry that my new computer isn’t here yet – because I took some rockin’ photos of some hilarious stuff I found.

I’ll tell ya about it, any way.

Support Philly Boys, and the Cradles to Crayons Foundation, in the Santa Speedo Run

Since the year 2000, the Philly Boys, a group of balls-out guys with hearts, have headed to Boston for the Santa Speedo Run, a charitable and hilarious 1.25-mile jog through freezing Boston. Every year, they raise money for a different charity, and this year it is the Cradles to Crayons Foundation, an organization that collects winter essentials for disadvantaged tykes. They really need some support, as a speedo isn’t enough! (I know, that was terrible.)

Our Philadelphia “boys” run on December 13. Please consider giving to this wonderful cause today by clicking on the “Philly Boys” link, above. Thanks!

The Douche Who Stole Christmas

Just saw a sad story on NBC 10 about a woman in Linwood who has had all of her kids’ Christmas gifts stolen.

Plus, I went to middle school with her! No joke!
