Ride the Ducks

Recently, my husband and I decided to take a 5 1/2 mile stroll around Center City (after which I swore never to walk again) and on this walkabout we stopped by Penn’s Landing for the first time since we moved here (one year ago). I’ve never been particularly interested in being seen in one of these monstrosities, but my poor aching feet might have wished maybe just a little bit to be on this boat.

Ride the Ducks

Ride the Ducks is actually relatively new to Philadelphia. They started up here in 2003. The boat is a 1945 era Army DUKW, which is essentially a 6×6 truck and with a watertight hull. I wonder, if they made these things look a little more rugged, would I find them a little less ridiculous? Then again, maybe the silly sight of them is what appeals to people. At the very least, I wouldn’t mind an opportunity to be out on a boat on some hot summer day, looking back at the city.

My wife and I visited Philly last Labor Day and rode the ducks (among many other things). Not a bad ride, tour, and swim. It takes you around some historic sites before jumping in the water. Once is enough.
