Far From the Madding Crowd

A couple weeks ago, I called up the Mercato, the BYOB that Vince went bonkers over some time ago, only to learn that my party of 6 for the week of Sept 11 could be seated, at the earliest, at 9:15pm. I hadn’t realized that Restaurant Week had rolled around again and reluctantly reserved the table by giving my credit card number and accepting a penalty to pay a $25 per person fee if I didn’t cancel 24 hours before the reseravation (thankfully I remembered to do that just this morning). After talking to my fellow diners, we decided to avoid the Restaurant Week establishments & actually get seated before 8pm so we’re trying out the Restaurant School on 42nd & Walnut instead. We were actually trying for a reservation at the Art Institute’s Culinary School on 23rd & Market but it closes the first week of Sept & reopens first week of Oct. Their restaurant, Petite Passion, offers a 6 course $30 prix fixe during the year. I believe the Restaurant School has a similar offering. I’ve been meaning to go ever since I lived a block away from the R.S. when I went to Penn–I’ll definitely be reporting back on the state of culinary affairs there after next week’s dinner outing.
