I’m not sure about gym memberships (because I don’t have one) but the indoor roller hockey league I participate in saw quite a growth. We went from 7 teams on Sunday mornings to 12 in our bracket and each of the other Sunday leagues saw growth. On weeknights all division saw growth (4 bronze level teams to 6 now, including the addition of my new team) and all divisions are sold out for the upcoming season. While some of this can be attributed to the NHL being back (so interest in hockey is up as well), I think alot of it is also people who don’t want to go to the gym but want to get some sort of excercise are looking to organized sports.

I agree that membership in organized sport is up, I see it in the PSSC as well. I think people want more ways to work out that include being social and having fun. It can get repetitive in the gym and it does take more effort to keep going. Soccer, Rock Climbing and Hockey are great ways to have fun and sweat a little. I think I always feel the best after a game of soccer.

Actually, ummm… we’re the 23rd FATTEST city in America. An improvement nonetheless.
