Off and running

The innaugural posting to Philly’s new Metroblog, how exciting. Philly’s a kick ass town, and there is definitely plenty to write about.

The 4th of July is coming up, and Live 8 is the big event. This is the first time in years that I have heard almost NOTHING about the usual Welcome America Celebration that Philly hosts.

With acts like Josh Groban, Toby Keith, Jars of Clay, Bon Jovi, and Dave Matthews, I am having a really hard time getting excited.

What about the “No Drive Zone” that is being setup around Center City during the show? Police will be cordoning off nearly the entirety of the Center City area starting at 6am on Saturday. Supposedly, if you live or work within the zone, as long as you can state your destination, you will be allowed in.

The city was smart enough to select a local shop to handle vendor sales. Festival Foods of Northern Liberties will be setting up 150 vending stands throughout the area. After a march on City Hall earlier this week by minority vendors, Mayor Street said that half the vendor spots will be for city businesses, and at least 30% will go to minority vendors.

No matter what happens, I’m sure it will be an interesting weekend.

    Indeed, welcome to Metroblogging.

You guys are all cracking me up with your Live 8 stuff. We narrowly escaped your fate when the National Park Service said, “You want to have a free concert on the National Mall? On the Fourth of July weekend? In the capital of the United States? Are you insane, or just on crack?”
