Get Smart

Each semester I look forward to receiving the Non-Credit course guide from Temple University Center City, 1515 Market Street. I pour over the catalog circling all of the things I wish to learn more about. Is there ever enough time? The Spring of 07 offers many opportunities. A course about King Tut that would be a great compliment to the Tut Exhibit at the Franklin Institute as well as the new Egyptian exhibit at University Museum looks interesting. Or how about a behind the scenes look at the city by signing up for, ‘Center City Savvy’ or ‘Great Architecture of Philadelphia’. This is a great way to meet other people while learning, just for fun. Check it out. Courses run from $45 to about $295. Call to get your catalog at 215-204-6946.

Rock at the Church

Last night my brother went through a Philadelphia rite of passage: he attended his first all-ages show in the basement of the First Unitarian Church at 22nd and Chestnut Streets.

Youse Just Hafta…

It started with our friends in DC, and Philly Metbloggers got the idea for Essential Philly. Welcome to the inaugural post!

In true Philly style, we start off the essentials by asking you, dear readers: what’s the one place in the city you just have to take people who visit you from out of town?

Besides taking non-Philly friends out for cheesesteaks, Tastykakes, soft pretzels and water ice, I like to do The Walk, which gives people just a taste of the city but enough for them to see its beauty and uniqueness. (The Walk will be featured in its own article next week!)

Eastern State Penitentiary is another one at the top of my list, and Brandyn agrees with me. Marisa also goes for historical value with Franklin Court and Betsy Ross House, but says she takes to kiddies to Rittenhouse Square to “take a picture of them sitting on the goat. I feel that’s required photo for all children who visit the city between the ages of 2-5 years of age.”

So what’s your thing, Philadelphians? Post your stories in the comments! If you’ve got an idea for an Essential Philly piece, suggest a story, please.
