Forbes magazine took it upon itself to create a list of the most miserable cities based on the Misery Index and the Misery Score compiling a list on Forbes.com. Evidently we are #5.

How miserable is Philly? The residents of the City of Brotherly Love once booed Santa Claus and pelted him with snowballs at an Eagles game. Maybe it’s the long commutes, violent crime and plethora of toxic waste sites that has people grumpy. Philadelphia scored in the top 20 in all three areas.

As if Forbes telling us we are a miserable bunch wasn’t enough the LA Metbloggers have decided that we suck based on this list with their post entitled, Detroit, New York, Philly, Chicago All Suck Worse.

Well LA let me tell you something. We tossed snowballs at Santa Claus because he was a fraud and we don’t like frauds. We enjoy our inconsistent weather. We like our long commutes. We like our tixic waste sites, we call them playgrounds. We like to dodge bullets on a daily basis because we are bad ass and we like to live on the edge. We’re not a miserable bunch, we’re happy so F off.

According to the 14th Annual “City Crime Rankings: Crime in Metropolitan America” Philadelphia is not one of the 10 most dangerous cities to live in. Based on the nightly news reports over the last few years I would have thought we would have soared to the top.

While Philadelphia may not be a top tier crime city, our friendly neighbor (or maybe it is unfriendly neighbor) Camden, NJ is listed in the top 10. The list goes as follows:

1. Detroit, MI
2. St. Louis, MO
3. Flint, MI
4. Oakland, CA
5. Camden, NJ
6. Birmingham, AL
7. North Charleston, SC
8. Memphis, TN
9. Richmond, CA
10. Cleveland, OH

It should be noted that the report has drawn sharp criticism, with the American Society of Criminology calling it an “irresponsible misuse” of crime data.

Former Philadelphia Flyer, Eric Lindros has plans to announce his retirement from professional hockey tomorrow. For Philly fans, the opinion on Lindros is basically split between those that loved him and those that hate him. A player of such hype and magnitude has that effect on people, just look at Sidney Crosby in Pittsburgh, however no one can deny the fact that during his time here he was one of the best, if not the best, hockey player in the world.

In 1994 he tied for the most points in the league with Jaromir Jagr and won the Hart Trophy as the league MVP. Playing with Mikael Renberg and John LeClair on the fabled Legion of Doom line, they dominated other teams. He helped lead the Flyers to the 1996-97 Stanley Cup finals, the last time the team has been to the big dance. In 2000 New Jersey Devils defenseman Scott Stevens laid a hit on Lindros that resulted in his sixth concussion. Lindros’ relationship with the team turned ugly and a battle between Lindros and Bob Clarke resulted in Lindros ultimately leaving the team.

He was never the same player after the Stevens hit and for the last few years has played in New York, Toronto and Dallas. Regardless of his quality of play over the last few years his statistics still show him for the great player he was. 372 goals and 493 assists for 865 points over 760 NHL games. Over his 13 year career he averaged just 58 games a season, yet still managed to average over a point per game.

Eric Lindros was a great player and a great Flyer. Whatever your personal feelings towards Lindros are, the NHL will lose one of the great ones tomorrow and if you are a fan of hockey, you should mourn just a little at that fact because it will be a sad day for the sport.

At least it is a good start, something the Eagles nor Phillies can not say at this moment. The Flyers are 1-0 after defeating the Calgary Flames last night to open up the season. New acquisition Daniel Briere started making good on his hefty salary immediately scoring twice, something that will endear him to fans at least until tomorrow night when they play Edmonton. Coach John Stevens is going to be in the hotseat all year, he has a solid lineup of young and veteran players and if he can’t get them to play under him this year, he might as well begin packing his office up now, at least he is off in the right direction.

Pittsburgh has one of the top ten neighborhoods in the country? Pittsburgh? Really?

C’mon we have plenty of great neighborhoods. What about…. you know that neighborhood where the guy got shot last night. You know which one I’m talking about, right? That’s a great neighborhood. And as for streets, where is the intersection of Red Lion and Roosevelt Blvd.? Or Grant And Roosevelt Blvd.? Sarcasm aside, we certainly have better neighborhoods and streets than some of the ones on their list. Screw you American Planning Association.

The new NHL hockey season is upon us and while nowhere near as popular as Fantasy Football (or Fantasy Baseball or Fantasy Basketball), Fantasy Hockey has been a fun past time of mine for well over a decade. When I first started playing it I was in high school and we did the scorekeeping ourselves using the weekly Hockey News and an arcane formula that we came up with in the Holy Ghost gym basement one morning. Leagues have evolved for us since then, no longer do we buy a hockey news to get the weekly stats (which were always off by about a week anyway) instead opting to allow the power of the internet and Yahoo! Sports in particular to keep track of the statistics while we micro manage or teams, making adjustments at the drop of a hat.

So why I am telling you this, well it turns out that the fantasy league that we have had running for the past 10+ years is in need of some new players. And by need I mean the draft is tonight at 11PM (live online draft) and we need two teams or else dummy accounts will be created and thrown out there. Of course everyone would prefer if we had a living people controlling the other two teams so I, being the commissioner, open the opportunity up to you the faithful Philly Metroblog readers…. Log into Yahoo! and sign up for Fantasy Hockey (under the sports tab - Fantasy) and join the private Sabre Hockey League for a fun year of Fantasy Hockey.

The league ID is: 54801 and the password is: sabres.

So if you are in the market for a fantasy hockey league between now and 10PM (I am locking the teams and creating dummy accounts if the league hasn’t filled by then) and can do a live draft or you are willing to risk the computer picking for you, please by all means join up.

Restaurant week began last night, for those that don’t know what restaurant week is I’ll give a quick explanation. Basically participating restaurants provide a set price menu ($30 for three courses) for people to come in and try out their food. It provides a nice way to try out some of the pricier center city dining establishments.

Anyway I decided to participate this time around and had heard good things about DiNardo’s Seafood (3rd and Race). Our reservations were at 7:45PM and upon arrival a little early we checked in and had a drink at the bar. Drink pricing was pretty standard for a center city bar ($6-$10 a cocktail). At promptly 7:45PM we were seated and I was kind of shocked to see that this “fine dining establishment” had tables and chairs I might see at McDonald’s but that’s a different story. Our menus were placed before us (the special restaurant week ones and the regular ones) and after glancing through both I decided to eat off the restaurant week menu, getting the broiled tilapia in white wine sauce. My wife got blackened shrimp alfredo. We also ordered a side of what the menu referred as “the best fires”, which while they were hot, I have had better. My cup of lobster bisque came out and it was decent. By this time we required a refill on our drinks, something that did not happen until well after our meal had been brought out. The broiled tilapia was very good but my wife’s shrimp alfredo had a weird orange tinge to it and a strange taste. Finally we got refills on our drinks and then desert was proposed, unfortunately they only provided three choices, all chocolate which kind of left my wife out in the cold as she is allergic to it. We asked if there was a non-chocolate alternative to which we were met with an evil stare and an “I’ll check”. She did check and revealed they have vanilla ice cream, so my wife ordered that. MY Dark Side of the Moon cake was good, although very rich and I actually never finished it because it was so rich. My wife’s ice cream on the other side seemingly came out of the freezer it had been stored in since the restaurant opened with giant chunks of ice and a funky taste to match. Overall I wouldn’t recommend DiNardo’s the food was good but not worth the price of even the set price of Restaurant Week.

Flyers training camp opened today with a few new faces in attendance and some old standbys gone. The biggest addition would be center Danny Briere who will be centering Simon Gagne and Mike Knuble. The over-rated Mike Richards will center newcomer Scott Hartnell and Sami Kapanen. Coach John Stevens has organized a three day round robin tournament for his guys, splitting them up into three teams. The new emphasis this year will be on gameplay - something they seemingly didn’t do last year. You know, actually play the game. The tournament will give the coaching staff a good idea of what they have in terms of overall talent and just about everyone will be playing for their job (although some are safer than others).

In other Flyers news, there is now a new all you can eat service at the Wachovia Center (in case you were extra special hungry) and for those that have the scratch to go to some games, individual game tickets go on sale tomorrow.
