Being spotted being helpful

I was walking home this afternoon around 2:30 pm along Chestnut Street, after meeting Sherri for lunch (we went to Mantra on 18th Street, by which I was pleasantly surprised. She’s been there more than I have, so hopefully, she’ll post about her experience soon cause it’s some yummy food).

I was talking to my mom on my cell phone when I noticed a woman getting out of a car at the curb and having some trouble doing so. She was carrying a cane and had a black removeable cast on her right foot. As I watched, the cane slipped out of her hand and hit the ground. I was a few steps away, so I swerved over to pick it up for her, because it didn’t look like it was going to be easy for her to do it herself. I held it up and made sure that she had it firmly in her hand before I let go. She thanked me and I told her it was my pleasure to help. We smiled at each other and went on walking.

I had only gone a few steps away when a woman stuck her head out of a passing car, looked at me and yelled, “That was very nice of you!” It was a little surprising, since I hadn’t done much, but it was a nice thing to have someone recognize my act of helpfulness and comment positively on it. I only hope that it spurs that person to do something nice for someone else.
