Gordon out, Myers in

In a not-so surprising move, the Phillies announced that troubled closer Tom Gordon has been placed on the 15 day disabled list. Gordon allegedly has some inflation in his rotator cuff, an injury, that according to some reports, has been nagging him since Spring Training. Displaced Ace, Brett Myers, will asume the role of closer in Gordon’s absence. Last night, Myers recorded his first save versus the San Francisco Giants and Barry Bonds.

One can only hope that Myers is more effective than Gordon has been. So far this season, Flash has recorded only 5 saves in 8 chances. Meanwhile, since being tossed out of the starting rotation, Myers has shown flashes of brilliance in relief.

The big question will be, that if Myers does well while Gordon is out, when Gordon returns does he automatically reassume the closer’s role? He’s been shaky all season. The other night, I bet Big White 5 bucks that Gordon would give up at least one run to the Braves in the bottom of the 9th. Suprisingly, Gordon made it out unscatthed, but this has been rare.
