Tandoor India Disappointment

Last week I raved about the amazing Indian buffet at Cafe Spice in Old City. This weekend, I have a slightly sadder tale to tell about an Indian buffet experience. I met the same two friends this morning for another Film Fest movie, but this time, the screening was in West Philly at the Bridge. Afterwards, we decided to try again for Indian and wandered into the Tandoor India Restaurant on 40th Street, between Walnut and Chestnut.

I had been there once before, nearly three years ago, and my memory of the place was that it had been fairly good, so there weren’t any warning bells ringing in my head. The lunch buffet was $7.99 (nearly half the price of Cafe Spice) and looked fairly good, so we got some plates and loaded up. While nothing was bad, nothing was really great either. It was just sort of a disappointment, especially after the wonderment that was the buffet from last weekend. The yogurt in the Chicken Tikka Masala was curdled and there was a dead ant sitting on a cucumber slice in the bowl of salad (I didn’t actually point that out to my friends, as it would have made them want to leave and I was hungry. I’m not sure that says good things about my level of discernment).

I think I’d rather eat Indian food less often and pay a little more for Cafe Spice.

The next time you’re looking for an Indian buffet in U. City, head to New Delhi (http://newdelhiweb.com/) at 40th and Chestnut (around the corner from Tandoor). Their Tikka Masala is *always* delicious….
