No place to eat in Wilmington

Tonight I was reminded that I often take for granted the number of great restaurants available in Philadelphia. Two friends and I drove down to Wilmington at about 6 pm, thinking we’d get there, grab some food and head over to the Grand Opera House for the Indigo Girls show. Another friend who works down there had recommended a couple good places, which we found without too much trouble. When we got there, we discovered that they were booked solid. As in, they were even taking reservations for the bar seats.

Now, I’m fine with places requiring reservations, but one was a fairly casual sushi place and the other was a pub. Not the kind of places at which you would typically think a reservation was required. And there was nothing else around. We had to get back in the car and drive several miles to find another cluster of restaurants. The first had a 40 minute wait, so we resorted to going to Joe’s Crab Shack. It was a kitschy place with crap hanging from every spare surface and the food was abundant but mediocre.

The thing we couldn’t get over was that our choices were so limited and that we had to drive distances to find food. It made me appreciate Philadelphia even more and think that if I go down to see another concert at the Grand Opera House, I’m having dinner in Philly before I leave.
