Songs From The Heart

Taking my own advice, ( see post: LUSH LIFE ) I took my bride to Morgans Cabaret last night to hear Allan Harris’ show, “Songs From The Heart”, the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Mr Harris was accompanied by a brilliant pianist Eric Reed.

In an intimate candle-lit room, holding two hundred, Mr. Harris played the audience as well as Mr. Reed played the piano. Slow and soulful at times with flourishes of love and tenderness and at other times finger snapping, toe tapping, hand clapping, down with it jazz. Mr.Harris has a voice that is clear, true, and nuanced, at times, bringing new and fresh interpretations to familiar songs.

When was the last time you were able to sit in a small venue and hear a male vocalist deliver jazz songs, and what are now American standards, close up and personal? If you love jazz, if you like Ellington, Strayhorn, live music, don’t hold back from treating yourself to, in my opinion, a tremendous opportunity.

At Morgan’s Cabaret at The Prince until the 25th. 215-569-9700
