Au revoir, trans fats.

Why couldn’t they have acted this quickly on the smoking ban? Fast on the heels of New York, Philadelphia passed their very own trans fat ban. The health department, however, doesn’t plan to enforce this at all and here in Philadelphia the “ban” actually means “less than .5 grams.”

For those of you who love your Tastykakes, worry not. The ban does not apply to pre-packaged foods. The first application is frying, where trans fats have to leave by September 1 of this year. Restaurants have a whole extra year to reformulate everything else.

I’m really shocked that the trans-fat ban passed so quickly here. Somehow I thought that there would have been more resistence.
