Greetings for the new year!

Happy New Year!

My greeting is belated because I have been so busy lately (yes, I did finally finish my dissertation!), but then this weekend I heard the newscasters on MYPHL explaining that it’s not the new year until the Mummers parade up Broad Street. It’s as though the world gave me an extra week to catch up! So here I am now, greeting you to a new year.

This was my first year actually attending the Mummer’s Parade, though I have been watching it on tv for several years now. But now that I live in Philadelphia and the parade was within walking distance of my apartment and it was decidedly balmy outside, I really couldn’t just sit at home and watch it on tv. I didn’t stay for the whole thing, but I popped over there for a few hours to get a taste of it.

Location:     Broad Street, Mummer’s Parade
Camera:     Canon EOS 350D Digital Rebel XT, Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6
EXIF:     Aperture Priority, Pattern Metering, EV 0, 1/100 sec, F/5.6, ISO-100, 200 mm (320 mm equivalent)

I have to say that you get a lot more information about the Mummers who are parading by when you watch it on tv. But at the same time, there is something about seeing this in person that is a lot more awe inspiring – some of these costumes and props are really incredible.

Looking around on Flickr, I found some beautiful photo sets – Dragonballyee, firefightersdaughter Cocoabiscuit, eugenemartin, odhusky, Okaypro -, as well as a couple of very nice individual photos here and here.

I will be back to posting regularly now, including featuring your photos from the Metroblogging Philadelphia Flickr group on Tuesdays and Thursdays!

Please add your Philadelphia photos to the Metroblogging Philadelphia Flickr group. Readers’ photos will be featured here on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
