“This is pneumonia weather”

So it’s Saturday, bright and sunny, and I’m getting ready to fill up my car at a local gas station. One of the employees comes out and strikes up a conversation with me. “This is pneumonia weather,” he says. “A lot of people don’t know that cold kills bacteria. Warm weather allows bacteria to grow.”

“Yup,” I said. “Then the weather turns cold again and people get sick.” I can’t say I know the why’s and wherefore’s about why people get sick when the weather turns cold again, other than they’re underdressed when the cold weather comes back, but he’s basically right about the bacteria.

He nodded and moved on.

Maybe that’s why I’m down with a nasty cold right now. Damn warm weather!
