Keeping The Gross Clinic in Philly
Some people in this town care passionately about the impending sale of Thomas Eakins’ The Gross Clinic. Me, I’m kind of ambivient. I recognize the mastery of the work, and the fact that Eakins’ was a unique artist in the history of this city. I just feel frustrated with the way Philadelphia doesn’t often value something until it is threatened. That frustration leads a part of me to believe that maybe we deserve to lose this piece, if it will encourage us to be more careful with our great works in the future.
