Photo of the Day: Bridge over the Schuylkill River
This photo by podolux almost looks like it could have been processed using HDR technology, with its lovely muted colors in the sky and the nice amount of detail maintained in the shadows. But I wonder if maybe this is just film? Or dare I say it, maybe it’s just a properly exposed digital photo? (No camera info seems to have been included with this photo, so I can’t tell.)

I actually doubt that it is HDR only because it still looks so natural and it hasn’t been uploaded to Flickr’s various HDR groups (e.g., HDR). And if it were HDR, I probably wouldn’t like it because it seems that people invariably overdo it, or perhaps what they’re really doing is underdoing it, but either way, the result is usually very artificial looking to my eyes. When I ever get around to trying this technique myself, I’m going to follow this tutorial which seems to share my philosophy that HDR technology could be used to do good, but you have to put in a little more post-processing effort and not trust the first pass to do everything you need it to do.
If anyone has any HDR photos of Philadelphia, we’d be interested to see them. Please consider adding them to the Metroblogging Philadelphia Flickr group.
As for this photo, I’m curious to know exacty where it was taken. It’s such a peaceful scene. As a newcomer to Philadelphia, I’m just not familiar enough with the bridges beyond Center City. Anyone know where this bridge is?

Hi. Thanks for selecting my picture. I will try to answer some of your questions.
I took it at about 5:45 pm, twilight, on a weekday evening. It was taken on the East side of the river and I was between the docks belonging to the police marine rescue and the boathouse used by North Catholic and LaSalle Prep. It is not film, it is digital and I used my Nikon Coolpix 8800. The colors are as they were and it is one of a few shots I got where the colors were right. I am hoping to get a DSLR soon, but right now I use my Canon Powershot A95 and the big, slow Coolpix which gives me photos of great quality. Thank you again very much for selecting my photograph, I like it, too. It was a rare peaceful evening for me. POD
