Weekly Flyers Update

Ok so last week I was giving an overview of the Flyers picks from the draft but I never got around to finishing it. But really does anyone care about the Flyers fifth, sixth and seventh round picks other than their parents and the rest of their family and friends? Anyway as we are now officially in the offseason for the NHL I would like to give a weekly update on the goings on of the hockey club.

So this past week the Flyers signed defensemen Nolan Baumgartner and Lars Jonsson. Baumgartner led the Vancouver Canucks defense in scoring last season while Jonsson played for HV 71 Jonkoping (Sweden) last year. The Flyers also signed center Matt Cullen to a one year deal. Cullen had 16 points in 29 games for the Chicago Blackhawks last season, his first in the NHL. And one other new addition to the team was former Minnesota center Randy Robitaille as he signed a one year contract. Robitaille recorded 12 goals and 28 assists last season with the Wild.

While those were the new faces added to the team, GM Bob Clarke resigned a couple young up and comers. R.J. Umberger signed a two year deal while Antero Niitymaki resigned for one year. Both players made significant contributions last season with Umberger posting 20 goals and Niitymaki posting 23 wins.
