Summer Solstice Weekend

In about 8 hours, I’ll wake up to the usual “What are you doing this weekend?” email I get from someone stuck at work and bored. (Since I’m not working for the summer, I can be free to bike and flit and sleep late and waste as much time as I please!) It doesn’t matter where I am or what I’m doing; someone always emails me from work on Friday, asking what the cards hold for my weekend.

I’m jumping that gun this time.
This weekend, I am sleeping very late on Friday to stock up for this crazy weekend event I found about via a full page ad in the Philadelphia Weekly then I’m spending my Saturday morning, afternoon, evening, late evening, overnight hours, and Sunday morning at the Kimmel Center. Yes, the Kimmel Center.

First, I’ve never been to the Kimmel; but I’ve walked by it a lot. (That counts, ne?) And I worked by it when I worked for the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue. Now is the time to actually go into the Kimmel Center! And this is the event!

For $12 in advance/$15 day of, anyone can have come-and-go access to the Kimmel’s entire Summer Solstice Celebration, which promises 19 straight hours of entertainment including a sunrise drum circle (BYOD!) and yoga on the roof (BYOM!). Let’s be serious; when is the next time you’ll have a chance to do yoga on the roof of the Kimmel? Exactly. That makes my $12 a worthy investment.

Other things I’m really looking forward to include the cabaret performances done by cast members of The Lion King (currently on tour in Philadelphia; my family saw it and LOVED every minute) at midnight, rooftop yoga with Daniel Shankin & Yanni on guitar at 10p, Steel ‘n’ Jazz at 1.30a, Montazh at 8.30p, and Bagpipe ‘n’ Drum on Broad and Spruce at 3p! (Yes, outside! On a Saturday afternoon!)

I doubt I’ll be bored. I mean, look at the line-up!

If you want to check this out, stop by the Kimmel today to pick up your tickets for $12 or order online or by phone. Tickets jump to $15 on the day of but still! That’s so cheap! Also, check out this bit of fine print: “No additional fees on phone or web sales.” A+ to the Kimmel for that move.

Also, if you’re going to be there, make sure to check the Kimmel’s Flickr page to see the details of their Summer Solstice photo contest. (Basically, shoot some awesome stuff. Upload it, tag it, stick it in the pool. Vote on other pictures, too. Then see if you win some prizes!)

Now, I need to go get my sleep on; I don’t want to miss anything at the Solstice Celebration. Rooftop garden yoga with Yanni, here I come!

So what are you doing this weekend?
