Sabres Crowned Champions
Last night Game Two of the Northeast Roller Hockey League Championship series took place and the Sabres were crowned league champions. The Arena was packed almost to capacity with many of the crowd there to cheer on the Sabres as they took on another CT Hockey product Team Hemi. The Sabres led the series 1-0 after a 6-3 victory last Thursday. After a tight two periods in which Team Hemi built a 3-1 lead, the Sabres exploded for three goals to put them ahead 4-3. Team Hemi wasn’t done though and fought back to take a 5-4 lead but regaining the lead seemed to be the last gasp for Team Hemi as the Sabres rattled off five goals in the final 8 minutes of play, with Team Hemi only registering one.
The Sabres and Team Hemi were thought to be heavy favorites coming into the season and neither CT Hockey product disappointed. The Sabres led the league from start to finish (9-1-0) with the Hemi grasping second place (7-3-0). Both teams had a hard fought semi-final match up before clashing with each other but in the end the two teams most observers expected to be in the finals were.
Unfortunately for CT Hockey this may have been the last gasp. After trying to reform the weeknight outdoor league for weeks it seems that there just isn’t enough interest to have a season at the Palmer Playground in Northeast Philadelphia. As for the two CT Hockey finalists in the NERHL, both teams have pretty much split apart. The Sabres have broken off into three different directions and Team Hemi will only have a few remaining players left. With registration due April 10, there may not be a team representing the folded league in any form soon.
But Hurray! for me as I took the New York Yankees approach to team building and was rewarded with a championship. I will hopefully have some pictures from the finals and the trophy presentation soon.
