GN’R Back But Does Philly Want Them?

December 6, 2005 Guns N’ Roses was supposed to make their triumphant return to Philadelphia. Instead they cancelled the tour at roughly 10PM, 2 hours after it was supposed to start and a riot ensued at the Center. The abrupt cancellation of the tour caused 93.3 WMMR to boycott Guns N’ Roses music for a week before finally deciding that not playing the music was only hurting the fans. Besides Guns N’ Roses is now basically the Axl Rose show as the rest of the original members have split (some forming Velvet Revolver) yet Axl continues on (with Use Your Illusion keyboardist Dizzy Reed in tow) as well as an all star line-up. For the last 10 years rumors have swirled about Axl’s project Chinese Democracy with no real concrete proof other than a few songs played at a smattering of live shows. Well the proof has arrived.

Four high quality “demos” were “leaked” to the internet over the last few weeks. WMMR even broke its promise of never playing anything new that Axl might produce under his Guns moniker by playing on of the leaked songs, ‘I.R.S.’. The leaks have a planned feel to them but that doesn’t take away from the fact that new Guns N’ Roses music has been released. Sites have been told to take down links to the songs but it seems like anyone with an interest can find the songs with just a little bit of searching. Rolling Stone will comment on the new songs in its March 23rd issue by pleading, “Hey, Axl, put the thing out it already sounds better than Velvet Revolver”

So what do the songs sound like? Well that’s a hard one to answer. All the songs have a different feel to them, yet all sound distinctly like they are Guns N’ Roses songs. “I.R.S.” is a hard nosed rocker with some industrial touches like Axl’s only officially released song “Oh My God” from 1999’s End of Days soundtrack. But don’t fret fans it’s much better than “Oh My God”. “Better” is another rocker with an interesting falsetto intro and some blazing guitar work. “There Was A Time” has already started controversy for it’s acronym that is being used instead of its name but overall it is probably the most reminiscent to Use Your Illusion styling reminding me of “November Rain” and “Estranged”. “Catcher in The Rye” is a more sing along party type song that has some excellent guitar work by Queen’s Brian May. Two other songs have been making the rounds for a few years now, “The Blues” is another Illusion era type song, likening to “Yesterdays”. And “Madagascar” which was partially played on the GN’R closing of the MTV music awards four years ago is the most different placing itself among Rose’s other epic songs.

So the question is with almost half of the mythical “Chinese Democracy” leaked do Philadelphia fans care? Do they want Axl back? If the rest of the music is as good as what was leaked will they accept the recluse musical genius with open arms? How does Philly feel about the reemergence of Guns N’ Roses? I know I’m hyped about it. Guns N’ Roses you never stopped being number one in my book.

It would seem that true GnR fans also love their shift key a little too much.

As for me, I think they’re total has-been shit and should go rot in the history of music.

SORRY BUT AXL WILL NEVER “ROT IN HISTORY” WHAT EVER THAT MEANS..HES GOT MORE TALENT IN HIS DICK THAN MOST HAVE IN THEIR WHOLE BEING.

I’m sorry, Pam; I couldn’t hear you. Could you yell a little louder, huh?

Also, Axl Rose’s dick is sacred and should never be invoked by mere mortals. Don’t anger the gods.

Ladies, no need to get in each other’s faces. But Pam, let’s not bring the talent of Axl’s dick into this argument here. I have no desire to hear anything about his sexual exploits unless they are in song form.
