Writing for Metblogs has the potential to be the most rewarding experience in your entire life. It’ll make you rich, famous, good looking, will help you lose weight, make your clothes fit better, and get you a super good deal on a new car. It will make you the most well known person on the entire planet. Yes, each and every one of you. Really.

OK maybe not. Actually those are all lies, but it’s fun at least. The truth is Metblogs is the largest network of locally focused blogs on the web, covering almost 60 cities around the world and we’re looking to add a few new bloggers/writters/authors to this fine site. If you wanna know more about us check out this wikipedia entry but it’s kinda boring so I won’t waste time repeating it all here again. If you wanna write for us, here’s the scoop:

• All author positions are volunteer. That means you don’t get paid.
• You must live in (or very near) the city you plan to write about.
• Anything you post must relate to the city somehow. That means you shouldn’t post a movie review, but talking about going to see a movie at a local theater is fine.
• There’s no requirement for how much you can or should write, but we ask that if we set you up as an author you make about 3 posts a week.
• You can post about things you love, you can post about things you hate. It’s entirely up to you

Hey, y’all! I have a friend participating in Helium’s Philly’s Phunniest Person Contest this week. It’s been going on since August 5, but this is semi-finals are Thursday, August 15, and the final competition is on Friday, August 16. 8 p.m. every night, $10. Get your ha-ha’s on!

Girls Rock Philly, a week long summer day-camp for female rockers ages 9-17, will hold their showcase at Girard College this Saturday. See the mini rockers rock out! They’ve formed bands, written songs, practiced hard, and learned jump kicks, for goodness sake! 6-8pm. There is a $5 donation requested.

Today  was the last day for the cafe.  The first restaurant inside a department store was in the original Wanamaker’s Grand Depot.

I bought out all their wonderful scones (to freeze) and had their carrot cake for lunch. Wednesday, I had my last tea there, complete with tea sandwiches.  I will miss the cafe…

Having been away for a while, I’m going to post some random things I’ve been doing/finding out about/hoping to do. I’ve found some more free movies, at the World Cafe Live. Maybe this will take me to the West. I never get over there!

I ran the Midnight Madness run for Back on My Feet, two weekends ago, already. The three races of the day were a huge success, raising $90,000.

I’m excited to see that local guy G. Love will be performing at the Festival Pier on August 16. I’m going!

Speaking of the Delaware riverfront, Philly Skyline has dubbed this season as “Summer of the Delaware.” Check out his fancy articles and terrific information. I’m psyched about the bike trail!

End of the summer will bring a visit from my sister. We’ll be lolling about in the city. What to do? What to do? Eastern State, Fairmount Park (does anyone know of any tours over there?), Kelly Drive, historic things, ice cream, Italian Market. Any suggestions?

If Metblogs is a city, hub.metblogs is the playground. We kept hearing from people that one of their favorite parts of Metblogs was meeting and interacting with readers and writers from other parts of the world, as well as getting requests for more ways that readers could be involved besides just posting comments. We thought about this for a while and decided that with a network like this, a giant community area where folks from all over the world could hang out, post photos and videos, talk with each other, form groups, play games, send messages, and do about a million other things was probably a pretty fun idea. The Hub is that.

The Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) announces the 2008 Wissahickon Photography Contest. Deadline is: September 29, 2008 at 5 p.m. Photographers may submit work in five categories: people; wildlife; landscape; structures; and FOW activities. All winners will receive a Friends of the Wissahickon T-shirt.In the Adult Competition, prizes will be awarded as follows: Grand Prize (Best in Show), $100; First Prize in each category, $50; second prize in each category, a gift certificate.Aspiring young photographers are welcome to enter our Junior Competition. Submissions will be judged in two age categories: 12 years and under and 13 to 17 years. Best in each category will receive a prize of $25.Competitors may submit up to six photos in any category. There is no entrance fee. The “storming of the Bastille” at Eastern State Penitentiary has become such a staple of mid-July Philadelphia, complete with “Let them eat Tastykake!”, but were you aware that this is a full four-day French extravaganza?

The Fairmount French Fling Weekend begins on Thursday, July 10, with a bar crawl starting at 7pm with Belgian Café, then moving on to other local drinkeries like Bishop’s Collar, London Grill, Rembrandt’s, St. Stephen’s Green, and Urban Saloon.

On Friday, Fairmount restaurants host food and wine tastings and dinner specials. Starting at 7:30pm, Ratatouille, Pepe Le Pew cartoons, and Paris Je T’aime screen outdoors on the lawn behind Eastern State.

Saturday brings the entire Bastille Day Street Festival, including tours at Eastern State, crafts and treats for kids, vendor tents and French foods, and live music. The storming of the Bastille begins in front of Eastern State at 5:30pm, followed by twilight tours of ESP and after-parties at participating Fairmount restaurants.

But then there’s still more food on Sunday! London Grill, Rembrandt’s, Trio, Belgian Café, and Urban Saloon offer French Champagne Brunch, featuring brunch specials with crêpes, beignets and other French delicacies.

For those who are looking to have some fun and help a good cause, July 19-20 will contain for you a variety of foot races. 20in24 is a collection of three races benefiting Back on My Feet, “a nonprofit organization that uses running as a vehicle to promote the self-sufficiency within Philadelphia’s homeless population.” I’ve signed up for the Midnight Madness Run (that’s midnight on Saturday night, July 19), a glow-in-the-dark race! There are two other races: a relay and an ultra marathon option. This is Philadelphia’s first 24-hour running event, and 100% of the profits go directly to the charity. All events are nearing capacity, so sign up today! If you aren’t running, come out with your friends and cheer everyone on!

I shot this from up in City Hall Tower; definitely worth the $5 elevator ride! I like the way the distortion makes the flat street look like a steep hill, and the graceful lines of the road.
