Single Sex Schools – What’s Your Take?

Having gone to high school in a all boys school, I support single sex schools as I feel I was more focused on the task at hand than on the pretty girls walking the hallways. Of course the task at hand was trying to avoid getting my ass kicked for the first two years of high school and then tormenting my one friend constantly for the next two years. Somewhere between sophomore and junior year I was left off the fight list. I can’t say that my grades were any better than what they would have been if I had gone to a co-ed school but I like to think they would have.

Philadelphia has three of the 42 publicly funded single sex schools in the nation and a fourth was to be voted on today. It seems not everyone supports the idea of single sex schools, voicing complaints that it sets back education for girls by segregating them from their male counterparts. My thoughts are that as long as the quality of education being received is the same for both sexes than there is no problem and there may even be benefits from it.

Girls are smarter than boys. I am sure that the female readers will agree with me on this. You women can’t drive worth a damn but you are smarter than us. Smarter than us as long as we (men, boys) aren’t in the picture, once we enter the equation your collective IQ drops off. Now granted this is a generalized statement and not all women lose their intelligence when guys are around but there is a good majority of girls (women) whom lose their heads trying to impress the hunky guy. Of course that’s not to say that when a guy enters a room full of women he get smarter, this would be completely untrue because he then starts to think with his smaller brain and focuses on one thing. His thing in her thing and that’s it. Of course you put ten guys in a room together with no women and their collective IQ drops to the bottom of the barrel but that is another tale altogether.

Besides the fact that I have probably offended just about everyone who is reading this, or was reading this as you probably aren’t reading this anymore (because you were so offended) and I am most likely just typing for the sake of typing, let’s get back on track. My point is that high school kids are fueled by hormones, so by eliminating the distraction of the opposite sex I feel education doesn’t suffer but is able to flourish more. Boys will still beat the hell out of each other and girls will still be catty to each other but overall the level of education excels due to the lack of in school distraction posed by members of the opposite sex.
