Goodbye to our Elephants?

Yesterday a local organization entitled, Friends of Philly Zoo Elephants, had people sign a petition at the Gallery in an effort to move the four Philadelphia Zoo Elephants to a sanctuary in Tennessee. The petitions garnered about 100 signatures.

The elephants currently live in an 1800 square foot barn and have a quarter acre exhibit on which to roam. The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, where the petition asks for the elephants to be sent, has 2700 acres of land for the elephants to roam. The sanctuary has both African and Asian elephants.

This past October the zoo announced that they did not have the money to build a new savanna for the four animals. Zoo officials will determine what will happen with the elephants on an animal-by-animal basis. Three large zoos have already closed their elephant exhibits this past year
