Sad Sad Story
I was set to write about the impending massacre when the University of Miami visits Temple at Lincoln Financial Field this Saturday, when I heard about some other depressing news.
This past Monday, the University of Penn community suffered a great loss when Kyle Ambrogi — senior RB for the school’s football team — committed suicide. His younger brother, Gregory, is a sophomore at UPenn and a DB on the team.
A St. Joseph’s Prep graduate from Havertown, he was enrolled in Penn’s Wharton School as a Finance major. In fact, only two days earlier, Ambrogi scored a pair of touchdowns for Penn’s win over Bucknell, 53-7.
“The Penn football family is deeply saddened today with the news of the sudden death of one of our shining lights, senior Kyle Ambrogi,” coach Al Bagnoli said in a statement. “Kyle was a remarkable young man, a true scholar/athlete, an ambassador for Penn, a tremendous teammate and leader on and off the field, as well as a caring and outstanding brother. His loss will be felt for a long time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this time.”
This is a very sad time for Ambrogi, his friends, his teammates, and the University of Pennsylvania as a whole. Although I did not know him personally — nor can I pretend to know any of the circumstances that could have led to his sad decision — I was familiar with his performance on the field. He will be truly missed by UPenn football fans everywhere.
I don’t know who out there reading this is religious, but everyone should try to at least take a moment and reflect on what would drive such a seemingly successful young man (in life and on the football field) and NFL prospect to kill himself. I feel very bad for his family, including his younger brother.
