Spring Garden Ooops

I had read earlier that they were doing constuction on an empty lot on the 1900 block of Spring Garden, so when I walked past Spring Garden and 20th last night to see it blocked off with a construction crew milling around, and a few squad cars, I just thought they were knocking something down. Nope. Not even close. Well actually I was right, but they didn’t get the right lot. I think this is the 4th time this has happened in Philly this summer. The construction crew was excavating an empty lot next to a building, and by accident(?) undermined the foundation of that building, which in turn caused the building to colapse. I don’t understand how this can happen, something needs to be done about this so it doesn’t happen again. 5 Temple students lived in this building, luckily none of them were hurt.
Take a look at this picture, the ENTIRE back half came down, you can even see the staircase that is now sticking out of the back half of the building. You can read about what happened here. Also for those interested about the other building collapses this summer take a look at this thread at Phillyblog.com building.jpg
