Jersey Fresh

The only good thing about living in Philadelphia in August is the abundance of cheap, fresh, AMAZING Jersey tomatoes that come rolling into the city. My local produce market (Jin’s Produce, 28 S. 20th St.) has boxes of them, priced at $1 a pound.

For years of my life, I was allergic to raw tomatoes. Don’t ask me to explain the technical details, I never really understood it any further than the fact that there’s some acid that gets neutralized upon cooking, but causes some people (including me) to vomit when consumed raw. But somehow, along the line, I grew out of the allergy and am now trying to make up for lost time with my beloved raw tomato.

Just remember, if at all possible, don’t put these babies in the fridge, it does bad things to their sugars and transforms them from succulent to mealy.

and mealy tomatoes don’t sound very appetizing.
