There’s a Storm a-Brewing

BastilleWoodcut.jpg Count de Monet: The people are revolting!
Louis XVI: You said it! They stink on ice!*

This week’s Philly Fun Guide (a local wonder that truly deserves a post of its own someday), called my attention towards Eastern State Penitentiary’s 11th annual Bastille Day Celebration.

The customary tours will run till 5, followed by a quasi-participatory “storming of the Bastille”:

Armed troops will capture Marie Antoinette (tossing over 2,000 Butterscotch Krimpits from the Prison

I would be SOLD on this idea of they were throwing something other than Butterscotch. That one flavor of Krimpet makes me cringe and whimper a little; I have no idea why.

Yeah, I hate butterscotch, too. Since I’m on a no-carb diet, I can’t eat ANY flavor of Tastykake. I’m just expecting to enjoy the spectacle of the Krimpet-toss, and if I’m unlucky enough to score a catch, I’ll give my pastry to a butterscotch fan.

Hmmm, is there a way to find out the relative popularity of TastyKake flavors? Maybe there’s a reason why the company has so many extra butterscotch to spare……

For some reason, people seem to remember and love Butterscotch after they move away. In fact, this book offers a recipe for them! (Then again, he also offers recipes for Twinkies…)

In fact, when I have to give gifts to people who aren’t from around here, I mail them three packets of Peanut Chews and three packets of Butterscotch Krimpets. Cheap, yes. But regional and quirky? Of course!
