Why I Live in Philadelphia
I’m in Portland, OR this week, visiting my parents and the city I mostly grew up in. Whenever I’m here I’m struck with how wonderful Portland is and I start wondering why exactly I live in Philadelphia in the first place. In order to maintain my sanity and not throw my life choices into too much disarray, I started making a mental list of all the reasons why I live in Philly.
Here are my reasons, what are yours?
I love the narrow alleys lined with houses that have been home to families for hundreds of years.
The Italian Market alone makes this city a place to call home.
The ghosts of my great-grandparents still exist in the City of Brotherly Love.
If you want to work in an academic setting, like I do, then Philly is the place do it.
Housing can still be relatively affordable.
People aren’t into thrift stores the way they are on the west coast, so the deals are more abundant.
I have amazing friends and community.
Walking is a viable form of transportation.
More than one major league sports team, Portland can’t hold a candle to that.
The restaurants are creative, varied and fun.
